Elevate Construction

Apr 20, 2023

Jason continues reading Elevating Construction Foreman with the section on crew leader and superintendent communication, which shifts from adjusting the system to preparing the work and removing roadblocks ahead of the crew. It covers six practical habits: pre-staging materials, preparing the next task while the crew is still in flow, communicating clean handoffs to the next trade, double-checking survey and layout, training workers during buffer time, and planning logistics on a visual map. Each ends with the same line, that doing this takes one more step toward creating flow in the field.

What you鈥檒l learn in this episode:

  • Why pre-staged materials let crews start working in the morning when they are freshest, instead of searching for materials
  • How to shift from reactive to proactive: prepare the next zone before the crew arrives
  • The nine conditions of a good handoff: clean, safe, organized, demobilized, complete with no defects, inspected, punched, layout refreshed, and an acceptable substrate
  • Why layout should be double-checked, and why the cost of checking is tiny next to a misplaced anchor bolt
  • How 20 to 40 minutes of training per work package, and a visual logistics plan, add to flow

Which of the six habits could your crew leader try on tomorrow鈥檚 work?
